Suffer the Children

Matthew 19:14 – “But Jesus said, suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” I suppose the kingdom of heaven is made up of people who are in God’s kingdom on earth.

The events of the day, Matthew 19:2 – “And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.” This was no dog and pony show! This was the real thing. The disciples “who had been called” were the executive committee. They felt indignant that their important friend, one who practised healing miracles, would be troubled by parents coming to him with their small children.

Today, too, we have mainstream Christianity. Terrific choirs. Eloquent and gifted orators. Magnificent church buildings. Families who have for generations “had their spiritual ducks in a row!”  Then we have the children, lacking in knowledge. Untaught, even a little grimy from playing in the mud found all around us. They may fuss in Church. The mainstream Christian, the “executive”, may accuse a small person’s tendency to fussing. Think again. Little children. “Suffer the little Children for of such is the kingdom.”

From the first chapter of the Old Testament, key people in the development of Christendom, the kingdom, were relatively poor examples of Godly behaviour.

A street evangelist tells me clientele of the high-class coffee shops in the big city are less likely to speak openly than the lower-class person at the “greasy spoon” place.

Have you ever imagined comparing before and after resumés with the saints when you reach heaven?

Suffer the little children for of such is the kingdom.
